These include exposure to sunlight, the buildup of airborne soil and acid, forming gas wastes from industrial sources, gas waste from household appliances, water damage from sweating windows, fraying along the pleated top from rod contact when drawing drapes, fraying along the bottom or outer edge from contact on window frames or other objects, and heat from registers and radiators. It’s important to note that sun fading, which may be mistaken for soil condition, can occur in dyestuffs exposed to direct sunlight for forty to sixty hours. This color issue due to sun becomes evident after cleaning. While these conditions are normal and cannot be prevented, regular cleaning or laundering, at least once a year, can significantly prolong the lifespan and enhance the appearance of your curtains and drapery.

1. Choose the appropriate fabric for your needs. If you have windows in sunny locations, opt for fabrics that are resistant to sunlight damage. Avoid using sheer fabrics as a substitution for shades or blinds. Keep in mind that synthetics tend to be more resistant than cellulose fibers, with silk being the least resistant option.

6. Never attempt to wash Rayon, Acetate, Mohair, Satin, Velvet, Polyester, or Hopsack drapes. These fabrics must be dry cleaned.
